James H. Sarles, 72, of Kerhonkson, NY, a retired Correctional Officer for NYS Department of Corrections and a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, died Monday, November 25, 2019 at the Achieve Rehab. and Nursing Facility, Liberty, NY.
The son of the late Harry and Florence Sarles, he was born January 18, 1947 in Binghamton, NY.
James was an avid outdoorsman, who loved nature and would not let his disability stop him from enjoying it. He was a storyteller and author of Native American short stories and also was very active in regional and local Native American gatherings and Pow Wows. Jim’s family would like to extend a “thank you” for the love and support of friends and family, as well as his Native American friends during this very difficult time.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Sarles, at home; his children, Heather Payne and her husband of OKla, James Sarles of New York City, NY and Amanda Grimm and her husband Michael of Monticello, NY; step daughters, Dana Ganschow and Chris of Midwest City, Okla and Erin Mehl and her husband, Brett of Oklahoma City, Okla; five grandchildren and two step grandchildren; a brother, Tom Sarles and his wife Lynn of Holly Hills, FL; and his brother-in-law, Dewey Bush and his wife Linda of Grand Island, NY.
Memorial services will be held in the Spring at Beaverkill State Park, Beaverkill, N.Y.
