Jerry Stone

Jerry G. Stone, a retired foreman working for Local # 147 Sandhogs in NYC as well as other unions and lifelong resident of Downsville, NY died Thursday, July 12, 2018 at home with family. He was 79.

The son of the late Cecil and Grace Jean Gladstone Stone, he was born November 7, 1938 in Walton, NY. Jerry was a man with simple aspirations: family, friends, and work were what mattered most. He graduated high school from DCS and from Morrisville Ag & Tech with an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology. He loved talking and tinkering about cars, was a longstanding member of the NRA and an original and honorary member of the O+Y Hunting Club. He enjoyed animals (especially his cat), gardening, working on cars, hunting, fishing, woodworking, NASCAR and drag racing, as well as spending time with friends and family. To those whose lives he touched, he was known as Poppy, great grandpa, brother, brother-in-law, Uncle Jerry, cousin, friend, a handy neighbor, and an awesome Dad not only to his biological children, but to those who “adopted” him as their own when their own parents had passed.

Survivors include his two sons, Kevin Stone and his wife Jackie of Calhoun City, MS and Dale Stone and his wife Brenda of Downsville, NY; two daughters, Lori Hale and her husband Kenneth of Amenia, NY and Julie Breakey and her former husband Walter of Oneonta, NY; one brother, Mike Stone of Downsville, NY; two brothers-in-law, Jim Shields and his wife Beverly, and Tom Shields and his wife Lavonne all of Downsville, NY; two sisters-in-law, Priscilla and her husband “Stub” Staruchowicz of Downsville, NY and Sally Braitling of Saugerties, NY; several grandchildren; great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jerry was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Gail Shields Stone on February 5, 2013, whom he married on January 17, 1960 in Downsville.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 10 AM to 12 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Ave, Roscoe, NY.  Funeral Services will be Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 12 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Ave, Roscoe, NY.
