Barbara A. Viele

Barbara A. Viele of Liberty, NY, a lifelong area resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at the Care Center at Sunset Lake, Liberty, NY. She was 84.

The daughter of the late Theron and Ethel Finkle Davenport, she was born February 7, 1941 in Roscoe, NY.

Barbara had worked for Richard Gross Law Offices in Liberty, NY. She was a Legal Secretary for over 20+ years after graduating from Albany Business College in 1961. She was a past member of the Sullivan County Legal Secretary’s Assoc. She was a member alongside her husband of the Happy Footers Square Dance Club in Youngsville for decades. They would love to travel to dance conventions to twirl the night away. Along with her love of music she played the Banjo, Accordion and Piano. She enjoyed baking and cooking for family and friends, and enjoyed her flower beds. In the earlier days she loved to go camping with her family up north. Barbara loved to water ski at their cabin on White Lake for years in the summertime and in earlier years snowmobile with the Travis family in the winter. Her passion was researching Genealogy. Especially her family. Barbara was the Historian at the Sullivan County Historical Society & Museum for years in her retirement. Barbara loved to do crafts and she was a past member of the Sullivan County Cooperative Extension, W.S.S. Nightlighters for over 20+ years. She held a term of office as Vice Chairman.

Barbara was predeceased by her Husband of 61 years Arthur Viele. Sisters Betty Dunn, Evelyn Carr and brother Thomas Davenport.

Survivors include her daughter, Helen Williams (Everett)of Livingston Manor, NY., son, Donald Viele (Theresa) of Liberty, NY. Grandchildren: Brandon(Drew), Douglas Williams, Stepgrand. Jeremy and Curtis(Caitlin)Williams. Kody Viele, Stepgrand. Dominique and Christopher Smith. Adored grandpups Casper, Nala Belle and Tucker.

Sister Ellen Bush & Stephen Dreher of Roscoe, Sister in Law Marion Davenport of Liberty. Several Nieces and Nephews.

Life long friends Wayne & Judy Travis, Nancy Menges. Family cousins Jack Bowers, Peggy Bowers Cumiskey, Carol & Frank Pittenturf. Special thanks to Carol Kehrley and to the Hospice of Sullivan & Orange. To the staff on Unit 2 at the Care Center at Sunset Lake and RN’s Helena & Mandy for your loving care.

Memorial contributions in Barbara’s name may be made to (in lieu of flowers) to the Sullivan County Historical Society & Museum, Hurleyville, NY.

Dignified cremation provided by Harris Crematorium LLC. Burial of cremains will be in the Lew Beach Cemetery, in the Spring.
