Carol Ann Newman

With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Carol Ann Newman, 81, of Grahamsville.

Carol was born on March 16, 1945, in Hancock to the late Lester and Betty Leroy Thomas. She died peacefully surrounded by her family.

Carol dedicated her life to her devoted husband and to raising their five children while also helping support the family income. She held jobs ranging from housekeeping to Avon and Stanley sales products representative, and later found her most beloved role as a personal caregiver , where she made many lifelong friends. Carol loved watching her flowers bloom, sitting on her porch watching the birds, and going for rides with her husband. She was an adored member of the WSCS Ladies Aid and Sundown United Methodist Church.

She cherished her childhood sweetheart and husband of 65 years with a devotion that grew stronger with each passing decade, viewing him as her rock, soulmate, and greatest companion. More than anything, her children and grandchildren were her world; she loved them with all her heart and soul, finding her happiest moments surrounded by her beloved family. One of the kindest, most loving people you could ever meet, Carol possessed a rare ability to make everyone feel special simply by being herself. Always there to support her family and friends, she was truly their rock, bringing warmth and comfort to those around her. While the world feels emptier without her, her loving legacy will never be forgotten.

Carol is survived by her husband, Barry Newman (Grahamsville); her five children: Grace Rivera (Sundown), Gloria Cargill (Parksville), Patricia Kearns and her husband John (Loch Sheldrake), Terri Dertinger and her husband Jacob (Woodbourne), and Richard Vail and his wife Carrie (Ellenville); and her eight grandchildren: Wayne Cargill III (partner Anthony Jassen), Barry Cargill, Byron Cargill, Alexis Kearns (fiancé Charles Marinaro), Brittany Dertinger, Sara Dertinger, Savannah Vail, and Raven Fuller.

She is also survived by her six siblings: Jenny Marshall (Roscoe), Betty Cunningham (Wisconsin), Brenda Santiago and her husband Miguel (Liberty), Penny Santiago and her husband Ely (Woodbourne), Tammy Thomas and her companion Paul (Monticello), and Nelson Thomas and his wife Rita (Livingston Manor); along with several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Lester and Betty Leroy Thomas; two sons-in-law, Hector Rivera and Wayne Cargill II; four brothers; five sisters; and many other loved ones.
