George E. Prouty, Jr., of Hortonville, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Garnet Health Medical Center in Harris, NY. He was 81.
Born on September 20, 1943, in Weymouth, MA, George was the son of the late George E. Prouty, Sr., and June Graham Prouty. A retired installer and repairman for Coca-Cola in Rye, NY, he moved from Pine Island, NY to Sullivan County in 2019.
A Mets fan since the very first day of the team’s existence, George’s love for the game—and for his beloved New York Mets—was one of his most enduring and defining traits. Whether celebrating rare wins or lamenting heartbreaking losses, he wore his Mets hat and tattoo with pride and passion every season of his life.
George had a joke for everyone and a sharp wit that kept his family and caregivers smiling until the very end. His sense of humor was a gift he shared generously, making even ordinary days feel lighter and warmer.
He was a former member of Christ Episcopal Church in Warwick, NY, and above all, a devoted family man. George and his wife, Virginia “Jenny” F. Grimm Prouty, were married for 50 years. For more than 30 of those years, she was his constant caregiver and companion, surrounding him with unwavering love, comfort, and support. George was a good father. His daughters and later, his grandchildren, brought him tremendous joy. He took great pride in their lives and accomplishments and loved being surrounded by their energy and affection.
George is survived by his wife Jenny, and his daughters: Anissa Giarla (David) of Holliston, MA; Hollie Papke (Jamie) of Milford, MA; Ashlea Prouty Buddenhagen (Kurt) of Hortonville, NY; and Shannon Decker (Carl) of Honesdale, PA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren—Jeremy, Kristy, Brittany, Michael, Nicole, Julianna, Sarah, Jaymes, and Madalyn—five great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, his younger brother James R. Prouty, Sr., and by his infant daughter, Heather Prouty.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 1:00 at the North Branch Methodist Church, with Pastor Virginia Bossley officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Lafayette Memorial Park in Brier Hill, PA.
