James Amato

James John Amato, 79, of Downsville, New York, passed away peacefully at home on July 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on December 31, 1946, in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Jacqulyn (Larsen) and Charles J. Amato. Jim made Downsville his home and became a well-known and respected member of the community. He graduated from Downsville Central School in 1966 before proudly serving his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Following his military service, and various local jobs, Jim built a successful career as the owner and operator of Gladstone Insurance Agency, where he worked alongside his staff serving the community for many years. He was known for his honesty, dedication, warm smile, and genuine care for his clients, many of whom became lifelong friends.

Jim was an active and dedicated member of his community. He was a proud member of the OY Hunting Club, James S. Moore American Legion, Downsville Lions Club, Colchester Chamber of Commerce, and the Catskill Insurance Association. Through these organizations, Jim enjoyed building friendships, supporting his community, and remaining connected to the people and causes that were important to him.

Above all else, Jim cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jo Ann Amato; his daughter, Lesa and her husband, Chris; his sons, Tony Amato and Travis Amato; and his stepchildren, Jeff and his wife, Laura, Tina and her husband, Joe, and Stacey and her husband, Dennis. He was a proud grandfather to Logen, Keegen, Adysen, Colten, James, and step-grandchildren Justin, Lindsey, Drew, Dale, and Dayleigh. He is also survived by special cousin John Sansavere (Madeline), and several nieces, nephews and great-grand children. Special thanks to dedicated respite care provider Betsy Mattice.

Jim was predeceased by his parents Charles and Jacqulyn Amato and siblings, Charles Amato, David Amato, and Diane Amato. He was predeceased by his son Justin Amato and step granddaughter Danell.

Jim enjoyed life to the fullest. Whether he was hunting in the woods, playing poker with friends, trying his luck on the slot machines at the casino, or simply spending time with family, he found joy in every moment. He had an infectious smile, a quick wit, and a wonderful sense of humor that could brighten anyone's day. He was known as a kind, generous, and positive man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His optimistic outlook and caring nature left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

During his illness Jim found comfort in watching the birds and wildlife with Jo Ann, and monitoring the steady Mattice traffic up and down McDonald Road.

Jim's greatest legacy is the love he shared with his family and friends. He taught those around him the importance of kindness, generosity, laughter, and living life with a positive attitude. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jim's life at a military honors service on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at the Paige Cemetery Military Monument, Downsville NY.

Following the service, the family will receive relatives and friends for a luncheon at the Downsville Fire Hall.
