Janice Therese Brey, “Nan,” age 89, passed away on October 28, 2026.

Janice was born Janice Therese Menges on October 3, 1937, on East Hill, Youngsville at home. Her parents were Peter And Wilda (Kehrley) Menges.

Janice grew up in Briscoe, NY where she roamed the neighborhood with the “Briscoe Bums.” She remained friends with many of the Bums throughout her life especially her cousin Glen Kehrley who became her travel companion and all around partner in crime.

After getting married, Janice moved to Kenoza Lake, NY. Janice eventually earned an associates degree in Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counseling from SUNY Sullivan. She was also a caregiver for several family members and neighbors. She was a gifted artist from since her high school years under the tutelage of Carol “Teach” Newkirk and her family and friends have many pieces of her varied styles of artwork. She once had a show of her artwork at the Nutshell thanks to her good friend and artist Conrad Fried.

Janice got along with people from all walks of life. Instead of bringing home stray animals, she brought home stray people, some of whom stayed.

Janice is survived by her children, Roger (Hope) Brey, Ruth (George) Ackermann, and Russell (Rachel) Brey; her grandchildren Tara Brey, Danielle Ackermann, and Cecilia (Michael) Brey; her dog, Molly; and several nieces and nephews.

Janice was predeceased by her husband Roger Brey (of Brey’s Egg Farm); her parents; her sister, Phyllis Scott; her brother, Richard Menges; and her daughter in law, Pam Brey.
