Jill Steele

Jill Murray Steele of East Branch, NY, a retired Registered Nurse and a longtime area resident, went to be with her Savior on Sunday, March 22, 2026. She was 75.

The daughter of the late Marcus Wilson Hathaway Jr. and Muriel Murray Hathaway, she was born April 18, 1950 in Annapolis, Maryland at the Naval Academy.

Jill grew up in Downsville with her mother and stepdad, Ernie and Muriel Hall. She graduated from Downsville Central School in 1968, and Excellus University School of Nursing in 1975. She worked most of her adult life as a registered nurse and ended her nursing career at the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, NY.

Jill married Gary Steele on June 7, 1969. She attended the East Branch Community Church, and she enjoyed reading, sewing, painting art, and baking.

Survivors include one son, Michael Steele and his wife Lorie of Horton Brook, NY; and a daughter, Jennifer Tompkins of Somers Point, NJ. Jill was blessed with many siblings; three brothers and four sisters, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. “Grandma Jill” loved her role as a grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Gary Steele on December 20, 2025.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 26, 2026 from 4 to 7 PM in the Harris Funeral Home Railroad Ave., Roscoe, NY.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 27, 2026 at 11:00 AM in the East Branch Community Church, Church Street, East Branch, NY. The Reverend Paul Cicio will officiate.

Burial will be in the Horton Cemetery, Horton, NY.
