John T. Sander

John Thomas Sander, 70, of North Branch, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, surrounded by his wife and children. John was born on March 27, 1955, in Liberty, New York, to the late Earl John Sander and Althea Mae Sander.

In his twenties, John worked in the tunnels of Chicago alongside several close friends, an experience he often spoke about with pride. He later returned home and worked as a salesman for Yaun Company in Liberty for 25 years. John also worked as a butcher at Peck’s Market, where he remained until his retirement.

John was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved hunting alongside his wife and son, and more recently with some of his granddaughters. He took great pride in sharing stories of his prized bucks with fellow hunters. He also cherished fishing with his wife, especially on opening day along the streams behind their home. Many summers were spent fishing with his wife, daughter, and son-in-law—though John was often more focused on changing lures than actually fishing.

Anyone who knew John knew his love for storytelling. He could recall moments from every stage of his life in remarkable detail. When gathered with friends, he would share endless stories from his youth, always mixed with humor and the occasional joke.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Dawn; his son, David Sander (Jacqui), and their children Nora, Evelyn, Phoebe, and Jack; and his daughter, Calley Erlwein (Kevin).

He was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Althea Sander, and his brother, Keith Sander.

A private service will be held, with arrangements provided by Harris Funeral Home.
