Josephine Pauline Tracy DeBellis, 91, of Downsville, NY, passed away on April 19, 2026 peacefully at home.
Born on April 15, 1935 in Bay Shore, NY, Josephine was the daughter of John and Rose Tracy. She lived a long and meaningful life defined by her warmth, generosity and devotion to those she loved. She was an exceptional cook, best known for her delicious lasagna, chicken cutlets, and her special spaghetti sauce with meatballs – meals that brought family and friends together time and time again.
Josephine found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved watching the birds, deer and even the pesky squirrels - as she would say, “they need to eat too”. An avid gardener, she took great pride in tending to her flowers and garden and watching them flourish. She enjoyed reminiscing about the “olden days” and sharing stories of what life was like growing up. Spring was her favorite time of year, when she could watch the earth burst into color and life. In the evenings, she found peace in listening to the frogs and crickets.
She enjoyed watching classic black and white movies, and the soothing sound of waves crashing along the shore. Grocery shopping with her daughter, Mary Ann, was never just an errand – it was an adventure filled with laughter, stories, and the joy of being together. She was also talented with her hands, spending time needlepointing and sewing.
Josephine worked as a bookkeeper at a Ford dealership on Long Island, where she met her beloved husband of 62 years, Frank. Their love story began with a single penny, when he would return to her desk to give back the change – an ordinary moment that became the beginning of a lifetime together. She was also a dedicated member of the North Babylon Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary. Later, she worked as a caregiver and cook at the Roscoe Adult Home, where her kindness and nurturing spirit touched many lives.
Above all, Josephine cherished being surrounded by her family. Her home was always a place of comfort, where everyone felt welcome, cared for, and well-fed.
She is survived by; her three children, Mary Ann Niforatos and husband George of Roscoe, NY, Frank DeBellis and companion Harriet Gardner of Downsville, NY, and Paula Presutti and husband Michael of Marlboro, NY, her four grandchildren; Niko Niforatos and wife Emily, Angela Niforatos and husband Bobby, Nicholas Presutti and wife Carissa, and Michael DeBellis, three great grandchildren Lucy Niforatos, Lacey Presutti, and Jase Presutti and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank DeBellis, beloved brothers Walter Tracy and John Tracy, loving sister Mary, and faithful dog Lucia, who was always by her side.
The family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to Jackie Budine, Karrie Jara, and Margaret O’Connor for their excellent care and compassion shown to Josephine and her family.
Visitation will be Thursday April 23, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Avenue, Roscoe, NY. A funeral service will be held on Friday April 24, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Harris Funeral Home, Roscoe. Burial will immediately follow in the Sullivan County Veteran’s Cemetery, Liberty, NY. Family and friends are invited to gather for a celebration of life at the Roscoe Community Center following the burial to share memories and honor her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, PO Box 88, Delhi, NY 13753.
Josephine will be remembered for her big heart, her delicious meals, and her ability to make everyone feel like family. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
