Larry A. Bivins of Livingston Manor, New York a lifelong area resident died Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at the Garnet Health Medical Center, Middletown, NY with his devoted family at his side. He was 74.
The son of the late Kenneth and Iva Decker Bivins, he was born May 4, 1952 in Liberty, NY. Larry was employed for many years as a Correctional Officer at Eastern Correctional Facility, where he dedicated himself to serving his community with pride and integrity.
In his leisure time, Larry enjoyed traveling, turkey hunting, gardening, and spending countless hours fishing. He was a volunteer with the Livingston Manor Renaissance, and always reached out his hand to all friends, neighbors, and even strangers in need.
Above all else, Larry cherished his family. His greatest joy in life was being a Grandpa, a title he wore with immense pride and love. Affectionately known by his family as the “baby whisperer,” Larry had a remarkable way with children. His gentle nature and comforting presence drew people to him, especially the youngest members of the family. He possessed a timeless spirit and a kind heart that made everyone feel welcome and at ease.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Carolyn Bivins, at home; his daughter, Maria Bivins of Livingston Manor, NY; his son, Christopher Bivins of Utica, NY; his grandchildren, Nathaniel DePaul and his partner Isabel Miller of Des Moines, IA; Jonathan Bivins of Utica, NY and, Alexander Bivins and his fiancée Kylee Nemeyer of Utica, NY; one great-grandchild, Jaedon Anthony Bivins; his brother, Bill Bivins of Willowemoc, NY; his brothers-in-law, Thomas Rowan (Bert), Robert Rowan (Yvonne), John Durkin, Walter Durkin (Lisa), and Thomas Totten; his sisters-in-law, Mary Quinn (Dennis), Patricia Durkin, Evelyn Ruppert (Richard); his good friend and brother, Lem Austin and his wife Rosetta; many nieces, nephews; and he was “Uncle Larry” to Josh, Kayla and Olivia Gardiner.
He is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Anthony Durkin, and sister-in-law, Betty Totten.
Visitation will be Monday, July 13, 2026 from 3 to 7 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY.
