Susan M. Conklin

Susan Marie Conklin, beloved mother and longtime resident of Fremont Center, passed away on Sunday, August 23 , 2026. She was 87.

Born in Passaic, New Jersey, to the late John and Marie Yuhas, Sue moved with her family to Long Eddy in 1971, spending the next four decades promoting thousands of local businesses in both the Catskill Shopper and the Sullivan County Democrat. Her graphic arts and typesetting skills – honed long before desktop publishing – encompassed everything from photos and clip art to typefaces and borders. She could instantly tell the size and weight of a line or piece of text, then choose the best one to pair with the slogan of a company. Her career bridged the slow but steady switch from analog to digital production, with Sue learning about and working on the earliest electronic typesetting equipment before eventually becoming the Democrat’s most skilled Macintosh user. Her knowledge of artwork, her sense of scale and type, her conscientious work ethic (hardly ever missing a day in over 35 years of employment at the Democrat), and her determination to create effective and compelling ads and layouts for local merchants made her a treasured and legendary resource at both the Catskill Shopper and the Democrat.

Her love for the graphic arts was only outweighed by her love for her family. She is survived by her son George Conklin (partner Karen) and daughter Ruth Bascom (husband Ken), granddaughters Valerie Collins, Jessica Treacy (husband James) , Cassidy O’Hara (husband Zachery), and six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters Marie Wulin, Dorthy Plumhoff and goddaughter Deanne Felton.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring staff of the Roscoe Rehabilitation and Nursing Home and the talented medical crew of Garnet Health.

In accordance with Sue’s wishes, there will be no funeral, but the family encourages those who knew and appreciated Sue to make a donation to the Roscoe Regional Rehab Patient Activity Fund, 420 Rockland Road, Roscoe, NY 12776.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Harris Funeral Home Railroad Ave., Roscoe, NY. 607-498-4929 or 845-439-5200 or www. Harris-FH.com
