Jeannette Whitmore

Jeannette Losee Whitmore of Liberty, NY — beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend — died Saturday, December 26, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY.  She was 79 (and a half) years old.

The daughter of the late Lawrence Knickerbocker and Anna Kilgour Losee, she was born June 21, 1941 in Rhinebeck, NY.  Jeannette grew up in Arlington, VA, eventually marrying her childhood sweetheart, George Michael Whitmore.  While in Virginia, Jeannette worked as a secretary at the Pentagon. She settled in Liberty in 1970 where she worked for Sullivan County Family Services for twenty years as a switchboard operator.

Jeannette was an active member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Liberty, NY.  Her hobbies included baking, swimming, photography, attending concerts, and traveling with her family.  She had an immense love for the color blue, tomatoes, and Elton John.  She was an avid reader, a movie fan, and enjoyed watching Jeopardy! and Mets games with her husband.  She adored attending her grandchildren’s school events, recitals, and scouting ceremonies. Jeannette was known for her warm smile, generous spirit, and quick wit.  Above all, her greatest joy was spending time with the people she loved.

Survivors include her husband, George M. Whitmore, at home; two daughters, Cheryl Gedvila and her husband Edmund of Tuxedo Park, NY and Denise Candela and her husband Andrew of Monroe, NY.  Additionally, she had four grandchildren, Madeline Gedvila, Maxwell Gedvila, Sophia Candela and Amelia Candela, who lovingly refer to her as “Gram Cracker.”  Jeannette had one brother, David Losee and his wife Julie who live in Fairport, NY; a daughter-in-law, Julianna Candela of Valley Cottage, NY; a niece and several nephews.  Jeannette was pre-deceased by her sister-in-law, Catherine Losee.

Private family memorial services will be held in the spring.  Burial will be in Saint John’s Reformed Church Cemetery in Upper Red Hook, New York.

Memorial contributions in Jeannette’s name may be made to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 24 Chestnut Street, Liberty, NY 12754.
